When More Practice Makes Things Worse

Practice is usually framed as the answer to difficulty.

-If you’re not improving, you need more reps.
-If it’s not working yet, you haven’t practiced enough.
-If you stay with it long enough, mastery will follow.

For many skills, this is absolutely true. Practice builds fluency, confidence, and precision. Over time, deliberate effort can turn awkwardness into competence.

So when something continues to feel hard, the advice is often straightforward:

Keep practicing.
Get more reps.
You’ll get there.

And yet…there are times when more practice doesn’t produce improvement. It produces frustration, fatigue, or a growing sense that something is off.

When Practice Stops Producing Progress

Many capable people are not strangers to practice. They’ve invested years honing skills. They understand the value of repetition and feedback. They know how to tolerate discomfort in service of long-term development.

So it can be especially unsettling when practice stops working. You may be doing the reps. You may be putting in the time. And still, things don’t improve in the way you expect. The effort feels strangely empty, or worse, it seems to reinforce a pattern you don’t actually want anymore.

This is often interpreted as a need for better technique or more discipline. But sometimes, the issue isn’t how you’re practicing.

It’s what you’re practicing and whether it still fits.

Practice Assumes the Skill Is the Right One

Deliberate practice is powerful when the skill being developed is clearly aligned with the context and direction you’re in. But practice doesn’t ask whether a skill still belongs. It assumes the target is correct and focuses on refinement.

That’s useful when the path is stable. It’s less useful when roles, environments, or identities are shifting.

In those moments, practicing harder can deepen attachment to a version of competence that no longer serves you, or that the current context no longer rewards.

When Mastery Becomes a Constraint

Skills are not neutral. They shape how you see problems, what you notice, and how others relate to you. Over time, expertise becomes part of identity: This is what I’m good at; This is how I contribute.

When circumstances change, that identity may lag behind reality.

Continuing to practice a familiar skill can feel safer than stepping into uncertainty. It preserves a sense of competence. But it can also delay adaptation, especially if the skill is no longer the one that’s actually needed. From the inside, this can feel like being stuck in effort without traction.

Why “Just Practice More” Can Backfire

Advice to increase practice assumes that effort will naturally translate into relevance. But practice is a reinforcing loop. It strengthens whatever pattern is already there. If the pattern is misaligned, more practice doesn’t correct it. It entrenches it.

That’s why some people find themselves becoming more efficient at something that no longer feels meaningful, or more polished in a role they’re quietly trying to outgrow.

The discomfort that follows isn’t a lack of grit. It’s a signal that the direction of development may need reassessment.

The Relational Cost of Practice

There’s another factor practice advice often ignores: time.

Deliberate practice requires sustained focus, often at the expense of other commitments. As responsibilities change, that cost becomes more visible. Continuing to invest heavily in a particular skill may create strain elsewhere: relationships, health, or priorities that now matter more.

The system notices these tradeoffs even if you haven’t articulated them yet. Resistance can emerge not because practice is hard, but because it’s crowding out something important.

A More Useful Question Than “How Do I Improve This Skill?”

When practice feels draining rather than developmental, it can help to pause the push for improvement.

Instead of asking: “How can I get better at this?” try asking: “Is this the skill that actually needs strengthening right now?”

That question doesn’t invalidate your past effort. It simply acknowledges that development is directional, not just incremental.

When Practice Becomes Supportive Again

Practice tends to feel energizing when it’s clearly in service of where you’re going, not where you’ve been. When the skill aligns with current demands and future direction, effort feels purposeful again. Feedback becomes informative rather than discouraging. Improvement restores momentum.

If practice is making you feel more constrained instead of more capable, it may be worth stepping back to examine whether mastery itself has become a kind of inertia. Sometimes, the most developmental move isn’t to practice harder.

It’s to reconsider what you’re practicing for.
